In recent years, agencies and organizations in Austin have initiated programs to help low-to-moderate income families become first-time homeowners. But one organization, Austin Habitat for Humanity, has been fostering affordable home ownership for 30 years using a time-honored formula of zero-profit mortgages, sweat equity from homebuyers and volunteer labor.

This year, Austin Habitat for Humanity celebrated building its 400th home.  The nonprofit has also repaired over 265 existing homes through its home repair program and provided free financial counseling to over 10,000 clients.

One Austin Habitat for Humanity client says her new home is a dream come true, after a nightmarish flood left her homeless two years ago.

The volunteers working on Ms. Gonzales, home are from Silicon Labs (half-house sponsor), Applied Materials, AMD, Cirrus Logic, Freescale, Intel, Rackspace, Tokyo Electron and 3M.
