What another great year! HousingWorks Austin is proud to continue our work locally and regionally to address affordable housing through thoughtful research, educational initiatives and advocacy. This year, we continued to provide extensive recommendations on the Land Development Code, Affordability Unlocked and other affordable housing policies and have grown our knowledge and advocacy base through convenings with affordable housing experts in other major Texas cities. We informed City Council and staff on Opportunity Zones by gathering regional experts in Austin and have entered the housing + transportation conversations to ensure that we plan comprehensively for affordability in our city. We are ready to continue our work in 2020.

Since the three major components of our mission at HousingWorks Austin are research, education and advocacy, we decided to format this book into those three categories, identifying projects in 2019 and showing you highlights of what is to come in 2020. Pages are color coded for your convenience.

We included our signature pieces of research – Austin at a Glance and the District-by-District Analysis, as well as “Who Needs Housing that is Affordable?” For the first time, HousingWorks has produced a “County at a Glance” for Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties to benchmark changes that are occurring in the region. This year was also the first year we included demographic information in our overall analysis as we believe it is important to track the change of demographics in correlation with our data.

We hope it allows you to have this important information at your fingertips whenever you need it. An updated map on the properties built with affordable housing bond funding passed in both 2006, 2013 and 2018 is also included in this booklet. Thank you for taking the time to view this booklet. We hope it will inspire you to support HousingWorks Austin as we work to help Austin realize our vision of “All Kinds of Homes, In All Parts of Town, For all Kinds of People.”
