When Austin’s centrally-located Robert Mueller Airport closed in 1999, talks were already well underway about what to do with the 700 acres of prime, City-owned real estate. There were many questions for the City, community leaders like HousingWorks Austin Board President Frances Ferguson, and the Catellus Development Corporation to explore. What they agreed on was that Mueller must be a dense, close-knit community, and it must include a significant amount of affordable housing of various types. Today, the Mueller plan is a blueprint for mixed-use, affordable and energy-efficient development.

In 2015, the redevelopment of Mueller earned the City of Austin the prestigious HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award. Click below to view a Keep Austin Affordable video feature that highlights the vision and foresight that made Mueller a place where today a diverse group of people live, work and play.

You’ll also meet some of the newest homeowners at Mueller, a family that is overcoming adversity with help from affordable housing.
