The Sustainable Food Center is best known for creating better access to healthy food through its farmers’ markets and community gardens. However, SFC’s motto is “Grow, Share, Prepare.” Prepare is where their “Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre” program comes in. The program is a cooking class series that’s held in churches, community centers and affordable housing developments. Participants learn how to make dishes from the Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre cookbook that are quick, healthy and affordable, something that’s very important in a city where many are struggling to pay housing costs. We found the Happy Kitchen set up in the learning center at Foundation Community’s Homestead Oaks Apartments.
