Last month, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) observed a milestone. It had been one year since the public housing provider had prohibited smoking in its units and on its properties, except in designated outdoor areas. It’s a decision HACA officials made to protect non-smoking tenants from the dangers of secondhand smoke, and it’s one that many smoking tenants, like Gloria Peterson and Rodney Hall didn’t care for. Now, many of those tenants are thankful the Housing Authority took that stand. In this Keep Austin Affordable video feature, you’ll learn more about that, and about the strategy Front Steps is using as it plans to ban smoking at the ARCH homeless shelter next month.
