Research Manager

Research Manager Job Description: 

The Research Manager plays a critical role in conducting research that supports HousingWorks Austin in its efforts to advance affordable housing policies and education. This position works collaboratively with the HousingWorks team to continue existing research projects and exploring new opportunities for further work. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker and an independent worker who has experience working with data from the United States Census Bureau, has some mapping skills, and is a persuasive written communicator. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct comprehensive and in-depth research on affordability issues in Austin, Travis County and the Central Texas region. 
  • Update existing research from the organization, including City and District Analysis, County and Precinct Analysis, Who Needs Housing That’s Affordable, Affordable Housing Bond, and Strategic Housing Blueprint Scorecard research. 
  • Research case studies and best practices from other communities to guide local policies. 
  • Create reports to communicate research findings to key partners and community members. 
  • Shape the communication and research agenda of the organization and act as a resource for other staff. 
  • Collaborate with other staff to create educational materials and advance research-driven policies. 
  • Assist in organizing and implementing educational events such as the annual summit and in-person affordable housing bus tours. 
  • Coordinate with partner organizations. 
  • All other duties assigned. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Graduate degree in planning, policy, or a related field (this qualification may be waived for applicants with commensurate work experience or exceptional skills). 
  • Excellent research, quantitative data analysis, and writing skills. 
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to collaborate with team members and organizational partners. 
  • Ability to problem solve and creatively tackle research questions. 
  • Commitment to racial, social, and economic justice. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of affordable housing issues, strategies, and themes. 
  • Experience working with data from the Census Bureau and from other publicly available datasets. 
  • Experience using ArcGIS or other mapping software. 
  • Experience conducting interviews and analyzing qualitative data. 
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. 
  • Experience designing materials with Canva or with other design software. 

Compensation: 

  • Full-time position with a salary of $60,000-$63,500, depending on experience. 
  • QSHERA healthcare reimbursement account with annual employer contributions of $3,000. 
  • Simple IRA with an employer matched contribution. 
  • Paid vacation, sick days, and holidays.
