Building Equitable Educational Opportunities panel
Moderator: Claudio Sanchez, Former Education Correspondent, NPR
Panelists: Megan Gallagher, Urban Institute & Sondra Samuels, Northside Achievement Zone
Historically, segregation of neighborhoods and education has limited equitable access to opportunities and economic mobility. Today, the growing housing affordability crisis in the United States is affecting school closures and disrupting the quality of education. This panel addressed unique policies and place-based initiatives that improve housing and educational opportunities, explored community programs that seek to close the academic achievement gap, and discussed housing and education partnerships that lead to more equitable outcomes.
Moving Toward Healthy Communities panel
Moderator: Dr. Michael Hole, Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin
Panelists: Robin Hacke, Center for Community Investment & Ruth Thomas-Squance, Build Healthy Places Network
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is shaped by a variety of factors, including the built environment, access to job opportunities, education and more. From the zoning of harmful land uses to the racial divides of congested highways and access to basic needs, the physical design of communities impacts health conditions and life expectancy. This panel will focus on solutions to move toward healthy communities, including collaborative community investment, policies to improve the social determinants of health, and innovative strategies that reshape the way we connect health to the built environment.
